The DC Voting Rights Tour
And the raison d'etre for Indie Roots: A national tour of DC indie bands to preach the gospel
coast to coast. Let's talk more about it here, shall we?
It is the position of Indie Roots that the issue of DC voting rights is a "no-brainer". If people
knew about the issue, they wouldn't say, "Voting rights for tax-paying, military-serving, law-abiding
Americans? Noooooo, sir! I can't support that!" So what's standing in the way of making DC voting rights a reality?
Exposure.
If people knew, they would care. But they don't know. The perception of Washington, DC to the average
American is perhaps as Stephen Colbert said, "the chocolate city with a marshmallow center and a graham cracker crust
of corruption." Just lawyers and politicians tinkering away with the laws of the nation. Unless one ventures beyond the
monuments, it's easy to miss that Washington is filled with everyday Americans living their lives, working normal jobs,
and contributing to the culture of our capital.
The purpose of the DC Voting Rights Tour is to bring some of the capital to the nation.
City by city, we'll spread the word that DC has a vibrant culture beyond the tourism industry, beyond right and left, and beyond
rich white landowners. And we'll provide a motivation to make the US capital more of everyone's -- to get
involved in the democratic process, contribute to the development of our national conversation, and participate in the
historical triumph of securing voting rights for DC citizens.
Man, that's a lot of platitudes. But we're serious. And we'll see you soon, America.
